Two MHS seniors earn perfect score on the ACT exam
Two Mundelein High School seniors, Alex Frumkin and Josh Larson, have earned perfect 36 scores on the ACT exam.
Frumkin is waiting to hear from all his preferred schools before deciding where to study next year. His top five choices are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia and the University of Chicago. He plans on an interdisciplinary major and hopes to go on to Law School. During his four years at MHS Frumkin has been involved in many clubs and organizations: president of Model UN, captain of the Academic Team, co-captain of the Mock Trial Team, a Mundelein Theatre board member, band and jazz band, FBLA, NHS and a member of a comedy troupe. He also just started a Philosophy Club at MHS.
Larson transferred from Dekalb High School when he was a sophomore. At DHS he was on the freshman soccer team and in the orchestra. He is currently a member of the IMEA District Orchestra. Larson has been accepted at Northwestern University where he will major in the math/science field. He is considering a teaching career after his college graduation.
Both students say that they had felt “pretty good” about their performance after they took the test. According to PrepScholar, about .108 percent of students taking the ACT Exam earn a perfect 36.
Activities
SAT
Last summer the State of Illinois decided to make the SAT the state mandated accountability test. All juniors will be required to take the SAT exam on Wednesday April 5, 2017. Students will report to school at the regular start time of 7:45 am. All sophomores will be required to take the PSAT 10 (practice SAT exam) on Wednesday April 5, 2017 at 7:45 am. Seniors and freshmen will not be in attendance that day as they will not be testing.
The SAT exam consists of the following sections: reading, writing and language, math, and an essay.
- Reading - consists of multiple choice questions that assess students’ understanding of reading passages, both fiction and nonfiction
- Writing and language - contains multiple choice questions in which students have to identify grammatical errors in written statements
- Math - a mix of multiple choice and short answer questions that test students’ understanding of linear equations, problem solving, and the manipulation of complex equations
- Essay – contains a reading passage in which students explain and evaluate the author’s argument using evidence from the passage as support
According to the College Board, the 11th grade college and career ready benchmark scores for the SAT tests are 460 for reading and writing and 510 for math. The SAT exam composite score is based on a range of 400 (lowest)-1600 (highest). The essay is scored separately based on an 8 point scale. Students will receive their scores directly in the mail at their home address one to two months following the April 5th testing session.
It is important to note that Illinois and out of state colleges and universities will accept ACT or SAT scores. Due to the state mandate, we will administer the free SAT at Mundelein High School. Mundelein High School will continue to be a host site for both the National ACT and SAT testing dates. For more information regarding ACT and SAT college admissions testing please visit their respective websites.

You will receive additional information about the testing logistics closer to the test date. If you have any additional questions at this time, please contact Tom Buenik with SAT questions or Stacey Gorman with PSAT (practice SAT) questions.

Mundelein Theatre to present unusual twist on Shakespeare
Mundelein Theatre is putting a modern twist on one of William Shakespeare’s most enduring and endearing comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play is set in the day room of a psychiatric hospital. The story and language remain the same, portraying the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of mechanicals who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set.
The play will be presented in the Mundelein High School Auditorium on February 2, 3 and 4 at 7 p.m. An after-school matinee is also set for February 3 at 3:45 p.m., which is free for MHS students. Tickets are a recommended donation of $5 for students and seniors and $7 for adults. Since the production will be staged on a 200-seat onstage thrust configuration, ticket reservations are recommended, and are available at www.mundeleintheatre.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to each performance.
“It is not unusual to take Shakespeare’s plays out of their original settings and place them in different eras and time periods,” said Jonathan Meier, the play’s director. “I think placing the play in a modern day hospital setting gives the play additional poignancy.” The concept has the patients at the hospital performing the play after most of the staff of the hospital has gone home for the evening. “The students took the characteristics that they developed when analyzing their Midsummer characters, and used that information to create their hospital characters. It was a really enlightening process.”
Leading the cast are Dan Haller (Lysander), Halli Carpender (Hermia), Robbie Iraburo-Cochran (Demetrius), Payton Cousins (Helena), Emily Parduhn (Titania), James Haller (Oberon), Colin Nacion (Puck), Kayla Raye (Bottom), Brianna Moderhack (Quince), Ryan Story (Flute), Jenna Panos (Snout), Mackenzie Haith (Snug), Natalie Williams (Starvling), Thomas Ferro (Thesius), and Claire Bullington (Hippolyta). Completing the cast are Sydney Litka, Jasmine Cuasay, Annie McGrath, Kate Fladhammer, Ellie Mellen, Kimberly Barr, Emily Saunders, Josh Saunders, Abby Smith, Bella Canela, Hannah Weiss and Joey Salit. Brenden Paul is the stage manager and Maddie Martorana and Ginny Zundel are the assistant directors.
