Mustang News September 2, 2016 - New Building Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place Saturday, September 10, from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Several school officials, local dignitaries, representatives from Legat Architects and IHC Builders along with a state and US representative will offer brief remarks. Student-lead tours of the new facilities will continue through 11:00 am. The public is welcome to attend.

“We specifically chose Homecoming Weekend for this event because many alumni will be in the area and are interested in seeing the striking addition to their alma mater,” said Kevin Myers, superintendent.

Construction began in the spring of 2015 for the $23.8 million facility, funded in part by a state grant set aside for classroom building. The new addition houses STEM labs and courses, Project Lead the Way instruction, a Business Incubator Lab, world languages courses, areas for multiple teaching stations and break-out rooms, a balcony and areas for outdoor activities. The addition bisects what was a large courtyard in the middle of the original section of the building. Several smaller courtyards are now part of that landscape for student use.

“Opening this new addition with a special focus on STEM and Project Lead the Way instruction is a dream come true for Mundelein High School,” said Principal Anthony Kroll. “We are now able to offer our students many opportunities to explore specialized subject areas and career possibilities while they are still in high school. This is a proud moment for District 120,” he concluded.

The Ceremony will take place on the lawn in front of the northeast entrance to the new addition.

Walk In Conferences will be held from 2:10 to 4:30 pm. Teachers will be available on a first come first served basis. Conferences will be limited to ten minutes each in order to accommodate as many parents and students as possible.

Teachers who coach a fall sport at MHS will have practice during the walk in time and will not be available.

Pre-scheduled Conferences will be held from 5:30-8:00 pm for parents who have made appointments online. To schedule a conference appointment please go to www.d120.org and follow the Pick-a-Time link. You may sign up anytime between 8:30 am Friday, September 9 and 12 noon on Tuesday, September 13. There are limited conference slots for each teacher, and all conferences will be ten minutes long.

If you are unable to attend in person conferences, but would like to discuss your student’s academic performance, please contact the teachers directly by phone or email.

Heart Smart Cardiac Screening
Mundelein High School students who are enrolled in a Wellness or in select Fine/Applied Arts courses during Term 1 will have the opportunity to participate in Screens for Teens on Wednesday, September 21.  The event is sponsored by the Max Schewitz Foundation which strives to provide high quality, low cost cardiac testing and relies extensively on volunteers to achieve its goals. The student test at MHS is $15 per student.

According to the Foundation, high school is an ideal time for someone to have a baseline EKG [electrocardiogram] since the greatest risk of sudden cardiac death is between ages 17 and 22. The EKG is a visual representation of the heart’s function. It is quick and painless and can detect many potentially life-threatening heart conditions.

Students will be tested at the building adjacent to the MHS west parking lot, formerly known as Kirk of the Lakes. Students being tested will remain at that location for the entire period while that class is being tested. They will walk to and from the building as a class.

Parent volunteers are also needed to help run the screening at MHS since the program relies on parents as the primary labor source for performing the EKGs. Parent training will take place from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 20 at the same location as the testing. Several administrative positions need to be filled as well which do not require training. About 65 parent volunteers are needed for the day.

To volunteer or to register a child for the test, visit www.heartsmartekg.org/MHS.

College Transcript Requests
As your senior student begins applying to colleges, they will often be required to submit their high school transcript.  Not all schools have this requirement as some (like U of I) use a “self-reporting” process and do not require submission of a transcript until after admission, but most schools do require a transcript as a part of their process.

MHS recommends that students request their transcripts when they are prepared to submit or upon submission of their application to a university. If the student is aware that they may procrastinate on completing their application, they should then request their transcript at least two weeks prior to the deadline for submission of that application. Transcript processing could take up to 2 weeks to complete, so knowledge of the application deadline is important.

In order to request a transcript from Mundelein High School, the students must log into their Naviance account. Our requests are all made electronically through this system. When a student is prepared to request their transcripts, they will follow the steps outlined below.

1. Add the school you are considering applying to to "Colleges I'm Thinking About" if this has not been previously done.

2. Once you are ready to complete the application process and request your transcript, select the school and click "Move to Application List."

3. Select your type of application from the drop down menu, click the "request" box under the transcript column, click the "I have submitted my application" box to confirm that you are ready to request your transcript - then click "Add Applications."

4. Choose your method of application submission (Common App, direct to the institution, Coalition App etc.) Please do NOT select "I'm not sure yet" as it can significantly delay the processing of your request!

5. Select "Update Applications."

6. If necessary, match your Common App account on the next screen.  This will only work when your Common Application is nearly complete. This step is not necessary if you are not using the Common Application to apply to the institution.

On the final screen, you are able to view the processing of your request.  Please allow two weeks from the time of your request for your transcript to be processed and submitted.

After Mundelein High School has submitted the transcript to the university, it may take a while for the University to update their system and make note of the received the transcript. Occasionally, a student will receive an email from the University stating that their transcript has not been received when in reality it simply has not been updated in their account. In most cases, it is just a matter of time before the university updates their system and prevents the automatic emails from being generated.  If the student is concerned, he or she should check in with their counselor or call the institution directly.

Boys Cross Country Won Lake County Invite
The Boys Cross Country team won The Lake County Invite named after Art Campbell (former Mundelein High School staff member) Wednesday, August 31. This is the first time in school history that the cross country team bring home the county win. Great job MHS! #mundypride .

This is a significant accomplishment and honor for the school and the program. The invite is named the "Art Campbell Invite" after former Mundelein CC/Track coach and Wellness Dept. chair Art Campbell. The Lake County Schools named the meet after Mr. Campbell many years ago to show their respect for the former Indiana track and cross country HS State and Big Ten Student athlete/champion/Mundelein coach.  Congratulations to Coach Rutz, Coach Christensen and the Boys Cross Country Team.
