MHS to host 55th annual Mundelein Jazz Invitational
Forty jazz bands and combos from 20 area middle schools and high schools will perform and be judged during the Mundelein Jazz Invitational to be held Saturday, March 14 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an awards presentation set for 6 p.m. Cost for all day is $5.

“The Mundelein Invitational Jazz Festival offers an opportunity for high school and middle school jazz bands/combos to experience both clinical and competitive aspects in equal measure and equal quality in order to better benefit the ensembles’ needs,” said Andy Sturgeon who directs the MHS instrumental music program with Jerald Shelato.

According to Sturgeon, all performing ensembles will receive substantial clinic time with one (or more) of the clinicians. Bands performing in the main auditorium will receive a 45-minute clinic after the performance while bands performing in the smaller venues will have extended clinic time with the three jazz educators in those spaces. A list of last year’s judging panel is available on the Mundelein Invitational website https://www.d120.org/activities/performing-arts/band/mundelein-invitational/ which also lists the schedule of the day-long performances. Adjudicators and clinicians are comprised of some of the most reputable jazz professionals in the Chicagoland area to include George Andrikokus, Alex Beltran, Tim Coffman, Mark Colby, Dana Hall, Bryan Itkowitz, Brian Jacobi, Bob Lark, Mike Lehman, Chris Madsen, Marlene Rosenburg and Bob Rzeszutko.

Guest Artist, The Heritage Jazz Orchestra, will perform at 12:40 p.m. Led by Luke Malewicz, it is the premier repertory jazz orchestra in Chicago. The group was formed in 2016 with the intention of bringing the best talent from Chicago and to explore classic big band repertoire including Count Basie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Buddy Rich and Stan Kenton. Since its inception the band has been featured regularly at many premier venues throughout Chicagoland including Andy’s Jazz Club, Winter’s Jazz Club and Jazz Record Art Collective. In addition to its club performances, they present entire album recreation concerts. The group has recreated several albums by the Count Basie Orchestra and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. The HFO also engages in educational outreach with local organizations including the Chicago Jazz Institute and frequently holds clinics at local area high schools.

Boys Track
It's a Great Day to be a Mustang!  Today we competed at the GBS Relays, and got an idea of what we actually have.  This type of meet is unique, in that every event is scored as a relay.  Field events add up each athlete's performance to come up with a total for that event.  The 4th long jumper on the team is as important as the 1st, or as I put it to the guys before the meet, EVERYBODY COUNTS!  It requires people to step up out of their comfort zones and try things they don't usually do.  What was truly amazing about this team, is that for the very first time for us, I didn't have to make a single substitution during the meet.  Everyone rose to the challenge, with some remarkable results.  I will summarize our efforts below.

Our Mustangs won 3 events, the 4 x 55m hurdles, the Distance Medley, and the Throwers 4 x 1 lap relay.  In the hurdles, Nicholas Tse and Jaxson Dennis ran the highs, with Tyler Miller and Sohan Karuturi running the lows.  Sohan had the fastest time on the night, with a total of 1 week of experience!   Carter Schorr (1200m), Armando Jimenez (400m), Michael Keegan (800m), and Nathan Clapp (1600m) combined to win the DMR.  For Nathan and Michael, this was only about 15 minutes after running the 4 x 1600m relay.  And what can I say about our throwers?  They destroyed the field for the 2nd consecutive year in their 4 x 1 lap relay, bringing home the win (and the pizza)!  Jaxson Dennis, Denis Dyachenko, Isaac Onyeise, and Michael Pipinis performed the honors in record time.

We received 2nd place finishes in the 4 x 1 lap relay and the Class 4 x 400 relay.  Saul Garcia, Reece Cruz, Cole Bradshaw, and Deangelo McClellan took care of business in the 4 x 1 lap, with Cole coming back 2 events later to run the Class Relay with Owen Marcotte, Sohan Karuturi, and Carter Schorr.  Carter blew the competition away on the anchor leg, running 52.9 in his first race of the season, passing multiple teams, and causing one opponent's coach to ask, "  Where the ---- did he come from?"

Our 3rd place finishes came in the Long Jump, 4 x 1600m, freshman 4 x 1 lap, and 4 x 400 relays.  Jacob Ko and Monte Alemu teamed up with Pipinis and McClellan in the Long Jump, with both Pipinis and McClellan getting PRs.  Clapp, Keegan, Angel Hernandez and Andrew Brizzell combined to take 3rd in the 4 x 1600m, with the first 3 all getting PRs.  The team of Cruz, Marcotte, Miller, and Marcel Siepko, showed great promise in the Freshman 4 x 1 lap with their 3rd, with Siepko teaming up with Garcia, McClellan, and Schorr in the 4 x 400.
Overall, we finished 3rd out of 6 teams, losing only to GBS and GBN.  Our youth served notice that they're willing and ready to contribute, and our team leaders did just that.  Great job, Mustangs!
