Mundelein boards of education to hold joint forum for stakeholders
As part of the shared services model for Mundelein School Districts 120 and 75, the Board of Education members of both districts are inviting all stakeholders to attend informative, interactive meetings Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the D120 district office at 1500 W Hawley ST in Mundelein. The meetings will take place for school district staff members from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and for community members from 6 to 8 p.m.

The meetings will focus on a theme of “Portrait of a Learner,” which addresses the concerns of what learners (students) should have at the various stages of development over their 12 years in Mundelein schools. The board members are using the acronym ASPIRE to signify their vision of A=Agile, S=Self-Assured, P=Proactive, I=Information-Seeking, R=Resilient and E=Empathetic. The vision involves both academic and developmental traits.

A number of community leaders have been invited to take part in the meetings including the mayor, village officials, members of the park district, police and fire departments, local business leaders, and area pastors.

“We invite all of our stakeholders to hear from the board and to share ideas with both D75 and 120 boards of education to exchange ideas about the future of education in the two districts,” said Kevin Myers, shared superintendent for D75 and D120.

Young adult novel author to meet with MHS students
Author of 17 novels in various genres, Barry Lyga, will speak with interested students Tuesday, Feb. 25 between 7:45 and 10:30 a.m. in the MHS Auditorium. Many of his works are geared toward adolescent audiences.

Lyga’s books have been or are set to be published in more than a dozen different languages in North America, Australia, Europe and Asia. He co-authored a novel, The Hive, with Morgan Baden which was recently named the winner of People Magazine’s Best Books of Fall 2019.

Lyga earned a degree in English from Yale University and worked in the comic book industry before devoting all of his focus to his lifelong love of writing. His first young adult novel, The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl, received starred reviews from Booklist and School Library Journal. Publishers Weekly named Lyga a “Flying Start” in December 2006 on the strength of the debut according to Lyga’s website.

Some of his most popular titles include I Hunt Killers, Blood of My Blood, Game, Thanos and others.

Arrangements for Lyga’s visit to MHS were made by Rebecca Plaza, library information specialist.

“All of the competing groups are outstanding show choirs, so it will be a wonderful day of entertainment for the audience,” Thompson said.

Another successful book talk!
Thank you to the brave MHS students who conquered the long walk, through the snow, to get to Sandburg.  Students from MHS visited 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classrooms at Carl Sandburg this morning after conquering a short walk through the snow. Students gave presentations about their book and promoted other activities that might be of interest to middle school students. The book love will continue to grow as MHS students plan to return for Book Talks once a month.
