MHS Mental Health and Wellbeing Parent/Guardian Event
On Monday, April 22nd at 6:00pm, MHS will be hosting a Mental Health Awareness parent event. This presentation, scheduled for an hour and a half, will consist of two components: first, volunteers from the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) will give a presentation called Ending the Silence. NAMI Ending the Silence is designed to give audience members an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative slideshow, short videos, and a personal testimony from a young adult living with a mental health condition. The presentation outlines symptoms of mental health conditions and gives attendees ideas about how to talk to their children and work with school staff.  For more information about Ending the Silence, please visit the NAMI website: https://www.nami.org/Find-Support/NAMI-Programs/NAMI-Ending-the-Silence.

Following the Ending the Silence presentation, representatives from Mundelein High School’s student services staff will give a brief presentation about MHS’s efforts to inform students about mental health as well as about services provided to MHS students and families. MHS staff will also be available to answer questions at this time.

If you plan to attend this presentation, please RSVP HERE. Thank you for partnering with MHS to support our students’ well being!

A divine musical comedy coming to Mundelein Theatre
What could be better than big, glitzy song and dance numbers that are the toast of Broadway-style musicals? How about big, glitzy song and dance numbers…with nuns? The current offering at Mundelein High School, Sister Act, will have plenty of both.
The show runs April 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. and April 27 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.  Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $7 for students, seniors and kids. Tickets may be purchased online at www.mundeleintheatre.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the door 45 minutes prior to curtain for each performance.

Written by Alan Menken, Glenn Slater and Bill and Cheri Steinkellner, and based on the 1992 film of the same name, Sister Act tells the story of aspiring disco diva Deloris Van Cartier. Trying to work her way to the top in 1970’s Philadelphia, Deloris falls in love with a very tough gangster named Curtis, and when she witnesses him commit a murder she ends up hiding on police orders in a convent whose parish has fallen on hard times. Though the sequin-free lifestyle doesn’t agree with her, Deloris finds her calling working with the choir, and breathes new life into the dusty convent while discovering a sisterhood she’s never had before.

“This musical has everything you want in a musical comedy,” said Jonathan Meier, the director of Sister Act. “There are huge production numbers, chase scenes, and beautiful love songs that everyone will enjoy. But at its core, Sister Act is a very heartfelt story of people discovering who they are, and who they can become, and how to accept others for who they are.” Senior Rachel Larson portrays Delores. “I knew that this was a very fun show when it was announced last year that this would be our musical,” stated Larson. “But in working on the show, I have really come to appreciate the wonderful message it communicates regarding how we treat each other as human beings.”
Other seniors in the cast are Sydney Litka (Mother Superior), Natalie Williams (Sister Mary Martin-of-Tours), Anooha Dasari (Sister Mary Theresa), Jake Cumberland (Monsignor O’Hara), Kimberly Barr and Josie Hutson (Featured Nuns), and Alexis Chavez, and Abby Smith (Ensemble). Others in featured roles are Mary McMurray (Sister Mary Robert), Paige Steiner (Sister Mary Patrick), Katie Staroszczyk (Sister Mary Lazarus), Elias Photopoulos (Curtis), Matthew Callas (Eddie), Colby Willis (TJ), Steven Weiss (Joey), Allan Rodriguez (Pablo), Pablin Ibarra (Ernie), Sierra Bouchard (Tina) and Mira Guiritan (Michelle). Other Featured Nuns are Rosy Castro, Joslyn Gange, Laryzza Lazaro, Alexis Lee, Ellie Mellen, Brenda Olayo, Addison Salski and Annalise Welsch. Rounding out the ensemble are Bella Buono, Tori Collins, Lance Evans, Emma Ferrin, Dean Hansen, Ahmad Koya, Derek Lee, Amari Liebe, Brooke Mellen, Gigi Mercado, Katie Myrant, Chris Nacion, Colin Nacion, Megan Saunders, Marta Sikora, Zoe Trahan and Eli Walter. The Production Stage Managers are Isabella Marotti and Becca Panos. The Student Assistant Director is Miriam Mitry.

Information Needed When Calling Student in with Illness
At MHS we have students who, for medical reasons, are highly susceptible to infections and are at a significant risk for their lives due to a rare genetic immune deficiency.  We ask for your help in keeping your students home if they have been running a fever with a frequent cough or painful throat.  When calling the attendance line for students who need to stay home, please leave a detailed message that includes the specific symptoms and reason for their absence. Please alert the school nursing staff of any new diagnosis of an illness that can be contagious. The families of these highly susceptible students are then able to get added medical treatment to help boost their ability to avoid getting sick if they are aware of a current infectious process.  We highly recommend students experiencing illness should not return to school until they are 24 hours fever or symptom free.  Students are encouraged to stay in touch with their teachers by email when they are home sick.  Accommodations can be made for missed work due to illness.
Thank you very much for your care and cooperation.

Class of 2020 Meningococcal Vaccine Requirement Announcement
All current 11th grade students are required to have documented proof of receiving the meningoccal vaccine prior to the start of 12th grade year.  We ask that you check your records and/or contact your doctor’s office for this proof to turn into the school as soon as possible. Supplies become depleted in late summer and early fall. Please do not risk having your student excluded from school at the beginning of their senior year. You can turn in your documented proof directly to the school nurse or to the front office.  Thank you very much for your prompt attention to this important matter.

Buckner strikes out 17 for Mundelein
Kira Buckner struck out 17 batters, Molly Podraza homered twice, and Mundelein's softball team defeated Zion-Benton 9-1 in North Suburban Conference action Monday.

Buckner allowed only 2 hits and 2 walks, and did not allow an earned run. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer and 2 RBI. Podraza finished 3-for-3, and Kendall Klatt also was 2-for-4 with a home run.

Girls Water Polo
Daily Herald

Libertyville's girls water polo team was on somewhat of a hot streak, winning eight of its first 10 games this season.  But Mundelein awaited Thursday night, and the Mustangs got the shot in the arm they supposedly needed. "It wasn't the start to the season we hoped for but tonight was one of our most complete games of the season," said Mundelein coach Mike Vukovics, whose girls posted a 9-6 North Suburban Conference win over the Wildcats in Mundelein. Mundelein improved to 6-6 overall while Libertyville fell to 8-3. They are both one game behind Stevenson in the NSC race with only a couple of conference games to go.

"We have these spurts where we have really good play," said Vukovics. "We had a couple of times where we let our guard down. Tonight showed us we have to play hard all the time. Tonight we were clicking, especially in the second half." As for the auspicious, let's say, start to the game for Mundelein, Libertyville jumped out to a fast 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Cate McCarty, who finished with 4 on the night.

"One of our strengths is scoring quickly right off the bat," said Cats coach Tracy Balla. "Our girls kept their hearts in it. I just think we got a little tired. Plus Mundelein has a great counterattack."
Mundelein got more active midway through the first and drew even 2-2 after goals by Ella Krauss and Jennifer Lopez. Libertyville regained the lead 3-2 late in the first on a goal by Anna Heard.
But Mundelein played a great second, outscoring Libertyville to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
Krauss added 2 more goals and Cayce Parker scored on a penalty shot. Meanwhile keeper Hannah Stanley was all over the place, stopping 4 Libertyville shots in the period. "They (Libertyville) came out strong but once we scored a couple of goals, we got things going," said Stanley, who stopped 12 shots on the night.

"Winning tonight is great for our momentum. We had a bumpy beginning to the season but this is a nice little reward for the hard work we put in. We were ready to compete tonight." As expected, no lead is safe whenever these two get together. Libertyville put together one of its best quarters in shutting out the Mustangs 2-0 in the third and drew even 5-5 heading to the final 7 minutes.

Coach: Nathan Sweet (second season)

Last season: seventh in NSC meet, 15th in Class 3A Palatine sectional

Returning athletes: Damia Ali (Jr., sprints/jumps), Anna Ambrose (So., pole vault/hurdles), Andrea Cordova (Sr., distance), Alyssa Cruz (So., hurdles), Trinity Gordon (Jr., sprints), Grace Heintz (Jr., jumps), Jeanelle Jimenez (Jr., distance), Raina Kratz (So., sprints), Caitlyn Mathews (Jr., sprints), Isabelle Murray (So., sprints/jumps), Madison Parola (Sr., throws), Daisy Perez (Sr., throws), Kaelyn Pirtle (So., sprints), Ryann Ray (Sr., sprints/high jump), Leslye Rodriguez (Sr., distance), Ahtziry Samano (Jr., jumps), Claire Schoenfield (Jr., distance), Dasha Stepaniouk (Jr., sprints/jumps), Khari Thompkins (Sr., sprints), Katerina Wiechering (So., sprints), Bridget Wunderlich (So., throws)
Newcomers: Alexis Bellecomo (FR., sprints), Teresa Burk (FR., sprints), Ella Carlson (FR., jumps), Lily Coutre (FR., sprints), Jocelyn Gomez (FR., distance), Jordyn Miller (FR., distance), Dee Sanders (Jr., hurdles), Hope Peterson (So., distance)

Outlook: The Mustangs are expecting to bounce back after a tough spring campaign a year ago. The Eastern Illinois-bound Thompkins, who medaled in the 400 at state as a sophomore and also qualified in the 100, had a season-long back injury and did not get back downstate last May. None of her teammates qualified for state either. She's back this season, and the Mustangs should get a boost from freshman distance runner Miller, who's an AAU national champ (3,000 meters). "Our team strength is the leadership of our seniors," Sweet said. "We have excellent role models who lead, guide and demonstrate the Mustang way of doing things on a daily basis. Our indoor portion of the season demonstrated a growth in many areas of our team from the 2018 season (6 indoor school records were set), allowing us to score in most areas of meet competition. As we move forward through the 2019 season, we expect to see continued growth and improvement in all aspects of the team with the main goal of improved team score at the NSC meet. We also are looking to send multiple girls/events to the state meet."

Coach: Kurt Rutz (second season)

Last season: fifth in NSC meet, sixth in Class 3A Grayslake North sectional
Top returning athletes: Seniors Mateusz Brak (high jump, hurdles), Aidan Afonso (relay), Michael Parduhn (relay), juniors Dillon Blake (3,200), Carter Schorr (relay), Sophomore Cody Gehrett (300 hurdles), Matt Empalmado (long jump)

Key newcomers: Senior Dario Carillo (800, 1,600, 3,200), junior Trevor Warner

Outlook: Blake was a state qualifier in the 3,200 and broke the school frosh-soph record in that race last year (9:23). Brak was all-sectional in the high jump, while Empalmado earned the same honor in the long jump. Afonso, Parduhn and Schorr were state qualifiers in the 3,200 relay, while Gehrett was all-conference in the 300 hurdles. Shawn Patrick and Syam Atade were all-conference and all-sectional as part of the 400 and 800 relays last year. Mundelein will be strong in the distance races, coming off a second state cross-country appearance in a row this past fall. Mundelein also returns 3/4 of its state 3,200 relay team. The Mustangs also have depth in the middle distances, while Brak and Gerhett lead the way in the hurdles. "We have a lot of depth in the middle distances with seven or eight runners competing for spots on that relay," said Rutz. "We have a good young group of sprinters who will challenging for spots." The Mustangs' 1,600 relay unit has the goal of breaking the school record of 4:27. Rutz is optimistic for this spring. "It's hard to replace an individual like Bobby Nuzzo (all-state performer, SIUE), but with improvements in the distance events, hurdles and young sprinter corps, we hope to improve on last year's conference finish," he said. "We have the potential to qualify for state in multiple events."

Baseball

Chicago State recruit Gigi Sahagun seeks to take Mundelein out of comfort zone
Gigi Sahagun was ready to try something different last year. “I am really shy when it comes to meeting new people,” she said. “But I felt like trying out for the high school team was going to take me out of my comfort zone.” After playing club her first two years, Sahagun joined Mundelein’s program last season. The Chicago State recruit made an immediate impact as an attacking midfielder, scoring 14 goals and adding two assists. She helped the Mustangs capture an outright North Suburban Conference title for the first time in program history. Her new teammates helped make a seamless transition. “I bonded right away with all the girls, not just the players my own age but the younger players and the seniors we had last year,” Sahagun said. “It was like a family. I never thought joining a team could mean so much to me.”

Heather Crawford, who’s in her first year as head coach after previously working as an assistant, said Sahagun’s club experience brought a new dimension to the varsity.

“Gigi has developed into the player she is because of the exposure she has gotten at the club level,” Crawford said. “Club players often have a knack for the game that others do not.

“Gigi has embraced bringing her club experiences into the team perfectly and shown what it takes to win at the top level.” While her skills and natural abilities have always allowed her to stand out, she has never been afraid to take a different path. When Sahagun first started with organized soccer at age 7, she was the only girl playing on a boys recreational team in a youth league in Mundelein. Now a senior, Sahagun stabilizes the middle of the Mustangs’ attack with her creativity, accurate touch and ability to find open seams or spaces. “I am a technical player,” she said. “I feel like I am able to look at the field and create plays that lead to breakaways. I am more of a player who sees the whole field and figures out what plays are able to work.”

Sahagun scored a goal Saturday in Mundelein’s 2-0 win over Lakes. She’s ready to push the Mustangs to an even higher level. “I am really proud of coming out for this team,” she said. “We are going to do big things this year.”

Boys Gymnastics
The Bob Bohl invitational Boys’ High School Gymnastics meet is the largest high school gymnastics invitational in the state of Illinois.  The meet consists of 18 different high schools and takes place over the course of 2 days.  Friday night was the varsity invitational, and Saturday was the Freshman and JV levels.  The invitational is named after Bob Bohl, a long-tenured PE teacher / athletic Director at MHS throughout the 70s and 80s.  The gymnastics program at MHS was created in the 60s, but really did not build a lot of recognition until Bob Bohl came to MHS.  He was responsible for staking claim on the upper stage area as a gymnastics only facility, and relentlessly promoting the team and sport by any means necessary.  He came to MHS already having a strong name in gymnastics in the state of Illinois.  He and several other coaches had created boys’ gymnastics in Illinois high schools, and his presence at MHS put us on the map as a gymnastics program.  Bob even created “Hey Rube”, a theatrical and comedic gymnastics and acrobatic circus performance at MHS every year that was a bright spot for the team and the community.  We name the meet for Bob (who still lives in Mundelein) not because he was the most successful coach in MHS history, but because he made the program into what it it today.
