MHS junior named semifinalist in national writing contest
Mundelein High School junior, Jocie Bank, has been named a semifinalist in the Ayn Rand Anthem Essay Contest that she participated in last spring in her Honors English 2 course. Her teacher, Beth Willis, explained that “essays were judged on whether the student was able to argue for and justify his or her view.” She said that judges looked for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized.

“Winning essays needed to demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of Anthem by Ayn Rand. Jocie’s essay placed in the top two percent of entries in the contest,” Willis said.
The Ayn Rand Institute provides free copies of Rand’s novels, along with guides for teaching them, to schools in the United States and Canada.

Ayn Rand [1905-1982] was a novelist and philosopher. She is best known for her novels Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, and for the revolutionary philosophy she originated called Objectivism.

Activities

We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too.
Has your student talked about the great book they’re reading? Have you heard about booktalks? That’s when a reader enthusiastically talks about a book they love.

MHS is doing something unique in our English classrooms and it all revolves around choice reading. Here’s how it happens: Every class begins with time to read. Students track reading and teachers conference with their readers. Booktalks offered by students or teachers happen daily.

In support of all this excitement about books are great classroom libraries and the MHS Library Media Center. The MHS Media Center houses a number of school services, one of which is the school’s library. It has an ever expanding book collection to meet demand. The impact of choice reading is that the first two weeks of this school year over 1,500 books were borrowed from the Library Media Center! Wow! Spanish language classrooms have joined in the effort and are contributing to such an amazing volume of reading.

At MHS, students select what they want to read. Our kids are enthusiastic about books, about authors, about genres. It’s a great thing for our library, but more importantly, for our students.

Brat Fest
The Mundelein School District 75 Administration, School Board Members and Parent Teacher Organization is holding its annual Brat Fest on Friday, September 7 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Carl Sandburg Middle School, 855 W. Hawley Street. A complete meal deal is $5 and includes a brat, hot dog or tamale; roasted corn on the cob; chips; and soda or water. Items may be purchased separately as well.

In addition to food, the event will feature family fun activities such as face painting, carnival games, a bounce house and obstacle course. Activities are $1 each.

Proceeds from the event go to the District 75 PTO, which helps fund teacher grants, assemblies, after school clubs and much more for district schools.
