Mundelein Theatre to present Shakespeare favorite 'with a twist'
Mundelein Theatre is putting a modern twist on one of William Shakespeare’s most enduring and endearing comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  The play is set in the day room of a psychiatric hospital. The story and language remain the same, portraying the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta.  These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of mechanicals who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set.

The play will be presented in the Mundelein High School Auditorium on February 2, 3 and 4 at 7 p.m. An after-school matinee is also set for February 3 at 3:45 p.m., which is free for MHS students. Tickets are a recommended donation of $5 for students and seniors and $7 for adults. Since the production will be staged on a 200-seat onstage thrust configuration, ticket reservations are recommended, and are available here. Tickets can also be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to each performance.

Logan was director of bands at Wheeling High School from 1991-2016. In his final year there Logan's Wind Ensemble performed at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival, their fourth appearance, and won the Class AAA Division at the University of Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival. At Jazz in the Meadows Wheeling's Jazz Band won Class AAA for the tenth consecutive year and Grand Champion for the third consecutive year. The Wheeling Jazz Combo performed at the Midwest Clinic, which was the third Wheeling performance at Midwest in six years. The "Wildcat" Marching Band won three First Place Awards along with two Grand Champion Titles. Twenty-three Wheeling band students earned spots in the ILEA District VII Concert and Jazz Bands.

The MHS band directors enjoy working with Logan and their students. “. We have already had him out throughout the year to work with our marching band and jazz band,” Sturgeon explained.

Free Women’s Self-defense class
The Mundelein Police Department is hosting a FREE class for women 18 and over who are interested in learning various self-defense tactics.  17 year-olds will be able to participate in the class with parental permission.  The class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. beginning February 21 and ending March 14 at the Mundelein Police Department, 221 North Lake Street. The first sessions will address not only the physical aspects of self-defense, but situational awareness and being aware of what is happening around you that may pose a threat.  “Our primary goal is to teach women awareness and prevention of violent attacks. However, if the situation is unavoidable, we also give them the tools they need to physically defend themselves through various real-life scenarios and proven defensive tactics,” said Officer Rachel Messina.

Mundelein Police Officers to become teachers in Criminal Law classes
For several weeks in February, Mundelein Police Officers will take over the teaching duties of Mary Plucinski, criminal law instructor at Mundelein High School. They will bring their expertise to add to the curriculum in the course.

Tuesday, Feb. 7, Investigator Mike Bush will discuss the fourth and fifth amendments that deal with rights of the accused as well as search and seizure. It is one of the ways the students will review that content before participating in a Moot Court about Fourth Amendment procedures.
Officer Chris Callas is scheduled to discuss arrest procedures with the class on Thursday, Feb. 16. Additional “guest teachers” will meet with the classes at later dates. The classes meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and from 10:40 to 11:50 a.m. on Thursdays.

“My students and I are very excited about having MPD officers join our classroom,” Plucinski said.  “As much as I've studied the case law and textbook procedures relevant to criminal law, I have obviously never been a part of that process myself.  Having experienced police officers answer their questions and help teach some material will provide our students with a unique combination of ‘textbook’ and ‘street knowledge’.  I've also had many students in the past few years express an interest in going into law enforcement so connecting them with our local officers gives them the opportunity to see what that career choice may look like,” she said.

“This is a great opportunity for our community and school to work together and to provide the students with real world experiences,” said Superintendent Kevin Myers.

College Representatives Visiting MHS
Did you know that students can meet with representatives from a variety of colleges across the US right here at MHS?

College representatives will be joining us again starting next week.  They will be available in the CCRC (B103), and attending their conferences is easy!  This is the best way to get information about potential schools without leaving MHS, and it is in every student's best interest to attend these visits if they are interested.

Students will sign up for these visits in their Naviance accounts. They simply click the Colleges tab, then click view all upcoming visits on the right side of the screen.  Find the visit that they wish to attend and select sign up.  Finally, click the sign me up button and print the confirmation screen.  This is their pass, and they must have their teacher sign it before coming down.
If a student loses their pass they can always go in and cancel the visit, then follow the same process again to sign up.

Worth noting:  If students have a school in their "Colleges I'm Thinking About" list and that college chooses to visit MHS, the student will get an email sent to their student address to let them know that the college is coming.  Use these lists to ensure they get updates!

Parents can view upcoming visits either by signing in as a Guest to Naviance goo.gl/0cv4LW or by checking the calendar on the CCRC webpage: http://www.d120.org/academics/ccrc/default.aspx.

Reminder: SAT Prep resources available at MHS!
On April 5th all MHS Juniors will be taking the SAT.  This is an important test that can have a large impact on college applications and potential scholarships for your student’s future.  Please take a look at all of the preparation resources that MHS is offering here: goo.gl/Gq4ab8

New Promise Program seeks applicants for Fall 2017
The CLC Promise Program, a new initiative to help eligible high school seniors afford college and graduate from CLC as close to debt-free as possible, will launch in Fall Semester 2017 and is seeking applicants from Lake County high school seniors.

The Promise Program covers the gap between federal and state financial aid and tuition and fees. It requires students to develop a two-year academic plan, create a career or transfer plan and participate in leadership and professional development activities. The preferred deadline to apply is Feb. 28 for Fall Semester 2017.

“The Promise Program is an exceptional learning experience for new CLC students coming directly from high school.  We are helping students with financial need achieve their college dreams,” said Eric Tammes, director of academic success.

To qualify, students must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Financial Aid), have an Expected Family Contribution of $3,000 or less and have a high school GPA of 2.3 or higher,  meet certain math and reading/writing requirements, reside in the College of Lake County district and graduate from a district high school (including home-schooled students). For details, call (847) 543-2090 or visit www.clcillinois.edu/promise.

“The CLC Promise Program is enthusiastically supported by district superintendents from the Lake County High School Alliance,” said CLC President Jerry Weber. About 200 students will be eligible per year, and after the initial funding is depleted, private donations raised through the CLC Foundation will support the program.
