2 MHS students named National Merit Scholarship Finalist
The National Merit Scholarship Program has now determined which of the 16,000 nation-wide semi-finalists have met all requirements to advance to Finalist standing. All Finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2017.

Supported Learning Program Starts New Business!
Last week, MHS students in the Supported Learning Program unveiled their new business available for staff members.  This promotional video says it all!


Activities


Friday Assembly
The King and Queen, along with four other couples to serve as their Court, will be announced at an all-school assembly on Friday, Feb. 24, at 2:45 p.m. in the main gym. The royalty will reign over the Winter Formal on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 7 to 10 p.m. The DJ will introduce the King, Queen and Court at 8 p.m. during the dance. This is the first Winter Formal Dance for MHS. It replaces the Turnabout Dance which was usually held close to Valentine’s Day each year.
During the assembly, the Mr. Mustang candidates will also be introduced. On Friday evening, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., the 15 seniors will compete for the title through talent, modeling, written messages to parents and answering a question.

Winter athletics and activities will also be recognized for their numerous accomplishments.



Term 4 Parking Permit Lottery
Junior and Senior Drivers:  TERM 4 Parking Permit lottery registration begins Monday February 27th.  Lottery selections will be made and posted Friday March 10th by 1:00PM.  You will have until 3:00pm Wednesday March 15th to bring in all completed paperwork along with payment, valid driver’s license, current vehicle registration and proof of insurance to receive your parking permit.
NO EXCEPTIONS!  Term 4 campus parking begins Monday March 13. Register on-line, only a few spots are available!

SoundFX takes first in Iowa competition
Mundelein High School’s all-male show choir, SoundFX, took first place this past weekend in the Unisex Division at the Great River Invitational in Davenport, Iowa. This is the second week in a row that the group took first place in a national competition. The all-female group, Lights, was named first runner-up. In addition, the mixed group, Sound, placed fifth runner-up in the finals competition.“Given the field, I was happy that they were in the mix in finals,” said Ben Schrank, one of the event clinicians. “Tonight you proved that you can hold your own with the best! ”The MHS show choirs will next compete at the John Hersey Chicagoland Showcase at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights.

The MHS vocal department, directed by Cory Thompson and Stevee Bellas, will hold auditions for next year’s groups Feb. 22 and 23 at 3:30 p.m.





Orchesis Dance Recital Monday, Feb 27th
Mhs Orchesis Club will host our next Dance Recital on Monday, Feb 27th at 7pm.  Show will include performances by the MHS PE dance class and the Orchesis club members.  Community Youth Dance Clinic will be held this Sunday from 1-2:30.  Cost is $15 and includes Tshirt.  Participants will dance with the Orchesis club members in the show Monday.  Cost of the show is $4 adults and $3 for seniors and students with ID.



Twelve students chosen for Illinois High School Arts Exhibition
Mundelein High School will be sending 12 of its top art students to the annual Illinois High School Arts Exhibition [IHSAE]  taking place Sunday, Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Chicago. The General Exhibition will take place at the Zhou B. Art Center while the Senior Scholarship Exhibition is set for the Bridgeport Art Center.

MHS students in the General Exhibition include Michael delRosario, photography; Ryan Story,
mixed media; Xochitl Cisneros, drawing; Lily Simon, painting; Stephanie Fernandez-Cahue, ceramics.Displaying their work in the Senior Scholarship Exhibition are Emma Roswick, Nicole Casler, Jessica Peterson, Laura Kim, Robert Zengeler, Jessica Milam and Nichole Babiez.

The 2017 Senior Scholarship Exhibition includes the work of those seniors who were chosen to
receive college scholarships from partnered institutions across the country. This part of the overall exhibition was only open to senior art students who submitted a developed portfolio of work through the program. This work may include work from multiple mediums, or be limited to one or two mediums; this choice is up to the student and the accompanying art instructor. These portfolios were then reviewed and selected by representatives from dozens of colleges and universities with strong art programs.

The 2017 General Exhibition and Awards presentation will be held at the Zhou B. Art Center. The Zhou brothers and the IHSAE have been partners since its inception in efforts to provide a space that allows for growth and for the Illinois community to gain exposure to the energy that the arts has in Illinois. This show will exhibit all of the student work as well as the work of the resident artists in the building.

The awards will be revealed and presented to students and families on Sunday. MHS art instructors are Jonathan Pruc, Michael Bale and Peter Schrenk. David Mork is the department chair.

Say YES to College: College Planning for Students with Disabilities (IEP/504)
February 28th, 7-8:30pm, District Meeting Room at MHS

Mundelein High School proudly welcomes Dr. Lynn Gallagher, the Director of Disability Services from the Lynch Learning Center at Loras College to discuss college planning for students with disabilities.  This presentation will cover questions to ask colleges and differences between the approach that the college takes compared to what high schools may provide for students with disabilities.  This event is open to families of students in all grades and will be available in Spanish as well.

College to host March information sessions on several career programs
Careers in several fields, ranging from surgical technology to truck driving, will be the focus of information sessions being offered at the College of Lake County in March.
Each session includes an overview of duties, a typical day, salary, job outlook and educational requirements. No RSVP is required. Unless noted otherwise, the sessions will take place at the Grayslake Campus.

Spring Sport Athletes
All spring sports athletes will need a white card for clearance to participate. The following items need to be handed in all at once in order for athletes to be given white cards.

  • Pay Mrs. Olson in the book store
  • Copy of current physicals
  • Athletic Paperwork filled out and signed
  • Bring the above information to Mrs. Risdon in the Athletic office to avoid waiting in line for clearance.


Wrestling
Varsity wrestlers had a very successful state run. Congratulations to Dane Durlacher All-State 4th place, Logan Kvien top 8 and Reese Durlacher State qualifier. All 3 of these state wrestlers will be returning next year!

Boys Track
Congratulations to Shane Kosmach on his triple jump of 41’1/2” at the Glenbrook South Indoor track meet. This is Shane’s new PR!
Congratulations to Mateusz Brak for his long jump of 5’9” which is 3” over his best…new PR!



Boys Swim/Dive
Sectional results: 3rd place 200 Free relay, Brandon Kavanaugh 7th place 100 Free, Chris Carlson drops 3 sec. and finished 6th in the 100 fly and the 400 free relay placed 4th. Congratulations on a fine season!

Gymnastics
Congratulations to Varsity gymnasts Katie Miller & Taylor Shanahan who competed down state last weekend. We are all proud of you.



Girls Basketball
Congratulations to Sarah Ouimet for advancing in 3 point shooting to the Sectional finals this Friday at Libertyville. We are all rooting for you!
